McNeese senior linebacker Landon Barrett was selected as the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
The Cowboys star recorded his first career pass interception in a 27-24 win over East Texas A&M on Saturday, which led to a McNeese touchdown. He finished the game with a game and season-high 11 tackles. Barrett also earned honorable mention for the Stats Perform national defensive honor.
For the season, Barrett leads McNeese with 31 total tackles and is second with three tackles for a loss.
It is Barrett’s first SLC Player of the Week honor, and it is the second honor for a Cowboy this season. McNeese quarterback Devin Lippold earned the offensive award following McNeese’s Sept. 5 victory over Texas Wesleyan.
The Cowboys (2-3, 1-2 SLC) will next travel to face 11th-ranked LSU this Saturday at 6:45 on the SEC Network. LSU is the second-highest-ranked FBS opponent for McNeese in school history. In 2000, the Miami Hurricanes were ranked No. 5 when opening up the season against the Cowboys.
This coming Saturday’s game will be the fourth scheduled contest between McNeese and LSU, the most of any for a Southland Conference and Louisiana FCS program. The two are scheduled to meet again in 2029. LSU holds a 2-0 lead in the series (the 2015 game was canceled due to the weather 10 plays into the game).
The Tigers beat the Cowboys 34-7 in their last meeting in 2021.
